CA SUPREME COURT DENIES CHALLENGE OF SENATE MAPS

The California Supreme Court is sticking with new Senate maps approved by a newly-formed citizen’s commission. The high court announced their decision today. The clarification was needed because a Republican-backed group opposes the commission’s new maps and wants voters to decide where the boundaries should be. The group says they've collected enough signatures to get a referendum on the ballot. But, they need to be validated.

DEADLY CRASH IN INDIO

A woman was killed last night after being struck by a motorcycle, then another car. It happened just after 8 p.m. on Indio Boulevard. Police say the victim was walking in a very dark part of the road when she was hit by a motorcyclist. Shortly afterward, a car struck the woman as she lay in the road. The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike in the collision. He was taken to a local hospital.

PS MAYOR SAYS PALM SPRINGS IS IN BEST ECONOMIC SHAPE

Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet says the city is in the best economic shape we’ve seen in years. He focused on the highlights yesterday from the last 12 months at the mayor’s annual State of the City address. One of the area’s Pougnet wants to focus on in the coming year is the revitalization of the downtown area.

MARRIOTT GETS $1 MILLION REBATE FROM PALM DESERT

The Palm Desert City Council voted yesterday to give the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa 1-Million-Dollars to help fund a water park. The money will be in the form of a rebate from its transient occupancy tax once the park opens. Under the plan, the Marriott will be given back the additional revenue generated by the water park until the refund reaches 1-Million-Dollars. The resort says the proposed 9-Million-Dollar water park is vital to the future of Desert Springs. The project is expected to generate more than 11-Million-Dollars in revenue over 5 years.

CATHEDRAL CITY WORKING TO REVAMP IMAGE

Cathedral City is in the process of revamping its image. City officials say they haven’t adopted a new slogan, but they’ve been working with communication firms to develop their story and stand out from some of the Valley's other destinations. The city’s communications officer says Cathedral City is working on boosting its number of visitors, but there are no firm plans yet.
