Work On Scenic Highway 1 Halted

A 7 mile stretch of Highway 1 in Central California remains closed from Carmel to Cambria due to  ground slides in the area.

Caltrans has halted excavation work as it tries to repair the problem that started on February 9th 2024.

The area is known as Regent’ Slide.

From Southern California, you can take Highway 1 to Cambria and San Simeon.  From Northern California, you can take Highway 1 down to Monterey.

But the stretch of Highway 1 from Cambria to Carmel is closed until Caltrans can assess the ongoing ground shift and what to do about it.
