A move by U-S Senate Democrats has failed to enact a federal law protecting the right to an abortion.

The proposal would have allowed abortion through all nine months of a pregnancy.

Democrats supported it overwhelmingly.  The only Democrat to bolt ranks was Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia.

It needed 60 votes to pass.

Only 49 Senators voted for it.  51 voted against it.
