Seven San Diego County Jail inmates are hospitalized after overdosing on fentanyl.

They are lucky to be alive, as 1/4 of a teaspoon of fentanyl has proven to be fatal.

Prison guards were alerted to a medical emergency in one of the housing units at the George Baily Detention Center in Otay Mesa , Saturday afternoon July 17th, 2021.

One inmate was found unresponsive and six others were found to be under the influence of fentanyl.

Medical staff administered Narcan, an overdose reversing drug.

The inmates were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.

This incident comes after eight inmates at the same detention facility were treated for fentanyl overdoses back in May of 2021.

No word on how the prisoners are smuggling the drug into the prison.
