Criminals are targeting Imperial Irrigation District customers again.
This time, they are threatening to cut off the power if a person does not make a payment on their power bill soon.
The thieves are spoofing a legitimate IID phone number that gets the district on the line, but doesn’t immediately take care of the problem.
Some 15-20 callers each day for the last several days have been returning scam calls, and in doing so, end up reaching one of the district’s water division offices.
“We appreciate our customers who care about their electric service and are trying to take action,” said Marcy Rivera, who leads the district’s Claims and Investigations Unit. “But customers who are concerned about their electric account need to directly connect with the district’s Customer Call Center where our representatives are ready and able to help.”
The Imperial Irrigation District Customer Call Center can be reached at 1-800-303-7756 or locally at 1-760-335-3640. Please have your account information handy when you call.
Customers can speak with a representative about the status of their bill and report any problems or concerns.
IID’s investigators have notified law enforcement authorities of the problem and asks customers to provide any information that can help shut down the scam calls.
“If a call sounds suspicious, more than likely it is,” Rivera added. “It’s OK to be diligent and hang up. Just because you see what looks to be a legitimate number, don’t assume anything. If you pick up the phone and call us directly at our Call Center, we’ll not only let you know if we’ve been trying to reach you, we’ll do whatever we can to help.”
