California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order banning the sale of new, gasoline-powered cars in California by 2035.
The order is one of the most vigorous actions the state is taking to achieve a zero tailpipe emission goal for new passenger vehicles.
Scientific researchers note that carbon emissions from petroleum-based fuels contribute to more than 40-percent of greenhouse gasses.
Newsom issued a statement saying that the executive order is “the most impactful step” California is taking to battle the global climate crisis.
He is also pushing to end fracking by 2024, but is pushing the California Legislature to take up the matter through legislation.
