Newsom Calling For Oil Reserves
August 16, 2024 6:03PM PDT
California Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing oil refineries to build and maintain strategic oil reserves to ensure against gasoline price spikes when supply shortages occur.
Newsom is asking legislators to pass a bill that would mandate the reserves.
Oil industry representatives counter that state regulations and taxes are the reason consumers pay so much for gasoline in California, and this plan would be costly to implement, increasing prices at the pump even more.
California also has unique blends of gasoline to combat smog, and that type of gasoline is not produced in any other state, making it even harder to find a supply of it, to salt away for a crisis.
