Governor Gavin Newsom has picked a woman from Maryland to fill the seat of late U-S Senator Dianne Feinstein of California.
Newsom has selected Laphonza Butler, a former advisor to Vice-President Kamala Harris.
Newsom upheld his pledge to pick a black woman for the post.
Butler owns a home in California, but is a registered voter in Maryland. She is a Democrat strategist who had advised Harris when Harris ran for President in 2020.
