The last Kmart store in California — and the West Coast — will be closing its doors before the end of 2021.

The closure of the Grass Valley location marks the end of Kmart’s pharmacy business in the contiguous 48 states and marks the discount retailer’s exit from the very state where it began, when it opened its  first Kmart store in the San Fernando Valley in January of 1962.

Target is set to take over the Grass Valley location in 2022 as it continues to buy up or take over leases at former Kmart locations in California and across the country.

Years of financial turmoil, including two bankruptcies in the last 20 years, and poor management, has led to Kmart’s downfall.

Once a company with nearly 25-hundred stores, there are now only about 15 Kmart stores left, a handful of which are in U.S. island territories, including a flagship store in Guam.
