Imposing A Ban On Book Bans

Public school districts can no longer ban books that teach students about alternative lifestyles, the LGBTQ+ community, or the history of the Spanish community in California, or any other ethnic and cultural special interest groups.

But those school districts are still allowed to ban books that teach students about specific religions.

The new ban on book bans, Assembly Bill 1078 in California, has been signed into law and takes effect July 1st 2025.

This legislation does not mention private schools. For now it pertains only to taxpayer-funded schools.
