An executive with the Walt Disney Co. is suing the company he works for.
Joel Hopkins claims he has been passed over for promotions and was not paid as well as his colleagues…because he is gay.
The lawsuit specifies sexual orientation discrimination and failure to prevent discrimination.
Hopkins is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
Hopkins was hired by Disney’s Buena Vista Television in 1994 as Director of Production Finance.
In his first 6 years on the job, he was promoted twice, becoming Executive Director and Vice President of Production Finance for Touchstone Television, which is owned by Disney.
But since then, Hopkins claims he was experienced an ongoing pattern of discrimination, including being denied promotions and not being paid the same amount as other department heads.
The lawsuit maintains Hopkins was falsely blamed for issues that were not his responsibility.
