Desert Healthcare District Approves Grants

The Desert Healthcare District & Foundation Board has approved 2 grants totaling more than 428-thousand dollars.

Nearly 229-thousand dollars is going to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside.  The money will be used to support training healthcare professionals, hosting clinics, starting a patient referral system, and distributing public health educational materials in an effort to improve access to medical car for the Latino and Native American populations in the Eastern Coachella Valley.

During the next two years, the project will involve medical, nursing, and undergraduate students, as well as promotoras (community healthcare workers), to provide care and referrals at the Coachella Valley Free Clinic in Mecca.

The Riverside County Office of Alternative Education is getting nearly 200-thousand dollars to cover  the salary and fringe benefits of a licensed behavioral health therapist serving students enrolled at six alternative school sites in the valley.

That therapist will conduct in-person visits and telehealth services, increasing access to mental and behavioral healthcare for those students.
