It was the second day of the new year, Sunday January 2nd 2022,and deputies were called on to make split second decisions with their lives on the line.
It was 1:25 in the afternoon, and a man with a rifle was trying to pry open a door at a home on Orange Street in Wildomar.
That man called 9-1-1, said he had a rifle, was suicidal, and was trying to make contact with another person inside the home.
Sheriffs helicopter crews spotted the the man with the rifle in the backyard of the house, as the occupant inside was calling dispatch for help.
Deputies raced to the scene, getting word the man with the rifle had fired off some shots. There was no time to summon a social worker to the scene, and a social worker’s life would have been in jeopardy if he or she tried to approach the man with the rifle.
A confrontation ensued, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
The man with the rifle was killed.
The person inside the home was not hurt. All the deputies are okay.
There are no outstanding suspects.
One deputy is now on administrative leave.
