The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to add a California butterfly to the list of threatened species.
The agency recommends adding the Hermes copper butterfly to the list in recognition of the threats it faces in its home region of San Diego County.
The proposal was filed earlier this month and will take about a year to finalize the listing and draw up critical habitat plans for the butterfly.
The Hermes copper butterfly lives only in Baja California Mexico and San Diego County.
