Standoff Ends; Cop Killer In Custody

26 year old John Felix of Palm Springs is in custody facing 2 counts of murder of a peace officer.

He was taken into custody around 1 o’clock Sunday morning, after keeping police at bay for nearly 12 hours.

Saturday afternoon during a domestic disturbance at a home on Cypress  Road, east of Sunrise Way, and north of Racquet Club in Palm Springs, Felix was inside the home when he fired shots through the front door, hitting 3 officers who were outside.

Two of those officers were killed.

They are 63 year old Jose Gilbert Vega,  who has spent 35 years on the Palm Springs Police Department, and was set to retire in just two months.

And 27 year old  Lesley Zerebny, who has been with Palm Springs Police for a year and a half.

She just returned from maternity leave, and leaves behind her husband and a 4 month old baby.

One other officer was shot in the incident, and he is alert and recovering.

Police throughout the county were called in during the standoff, and SWAT teams were on hand when Felix finally gave up.

Felix is a career criminal, he served 2 years in prison when he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2009.  The original charge was attempted murder, but it was lowered to the assault charge.

In 2013, he was in trouble again at the same house on Cypress Road where he shot the officers to death on Saturday.

The 2013 case involved resisting arrest, but he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
