D.A.’S OFFICE REVIEWING COUNCILMAN ARREST CASE

The Riverside County District Attorney’s office is still reviewing a case stemming from the arrest of Coachella City Councilman Gilbert Ramirez Jr. in April 24th. The encounter took place at Coachella City Hall between Ramirez, Mayor Eduardo Garcia and Assistant City Manager Steve Brown. Afterwards, Ramirez was arrested on suspicion for misdemeanor vandalism, issued a citation and asked to appear in court on July 2nd. But Thursday morning Assistant Police chief Frank Taylor called him to say the D.A.’s office hadn’t filed charges yet. Ramirez claims he was falsely arrested, and is sure the case is over. But The Riverside County D.A.’s office says the case is still being reviewed. Garcia contends that during the incident Ramirez, while on a profanity-filled tirade, made an obscene gesture and kicked Garcia’s car. Ramirez alleges Garcia tried to run him over. Ramirez says his arrest was an effort by the mayor to make him look bad. The case has three possible outcomes: charges could be filed, further investigation could be ordered, or charges could be dropped for lack of evidence.

And while that's all about to change, there are still limits. Beards and goatees will be OK as long as they're no more than a quarter-inch in length and not a “soul patch.”
